In the following public statement Amnesty International, CEJIL, and Protection International urge Honduras to guarantee the participation of civil society in the discussions on the regulation of the Law Protecting Human Rights Defenders.
Indeed, the law Protecting Human Rights Defenders was adopted on May 15 2015. Although Amnesty International, CEJIL, and Protection International welcome it as a important step towards the implementation of protection measures, we would also like to point out that its mere adoption does not reflect the practical implementation by the State of Honduras of this law, to fully protect, respect and guarantee the rights of HDRs. Therefore we call for the State of Honduras to guarantee that the discussion on the regulation of said law will be both open and involve the participation of civil society.
