In 2015 and 2016, Protection International continued to support the work of human rights defenders (HRDs), communities and organisations in a number of countries in South-East Asia, Africa, Central and Latin America. The following Annual Report summarizes Protection International’s efforts to assist and empower HRDs with capacity building, research and advocacy.
By maintaining strong partnerships with local groups and defenders we have been able to strengthen protection networks in Indonesia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Kenya and use our research to produce such publications as “Criminalisation of Human Rights Defenders – Categorisation of the problem and measures in response“.
We have featured environmental defenders in this report as the risks to this particular group of HRDs continue to increase with each passing year. Our photo exhibition “For Those Who Died Trying”, portraying environmental defenders who have been murdered or abducted in Thailand, started its tour in 2016 and will continue into 2017.
We dedicate this Annual Report to members of COPINH (Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras) who have lost their lives defending the struggle for land and freedoms in Honduras. Thank you to all those who support and help us in our efforts to improve the protection of human rights defenders.
