Michel Forst , UN Special Rapporteur on HRD
The mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders was established in 2000 in support for the implementation of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
This UN Declaration is formally known as: The Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. It was adopted by consensus at the UN’s General Assembly of Member States on 9 December 1998.
Protection International supports the UN Special Rapporteur by offering information obtained through its operations in various countries, by communicating cases of violations of Human Rights Defenders rights and by collaborating in an initiative to promote standards for national mechanisms and legislations for the protection of Human Rights Defenders.
Protection International also support regional special mechanisms for the protection of Human Rights Defenders such as the Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights Defenders of the African Commission on Human – and Peoples’ Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
