The protection of defenders is a dynamic field in constant development. There exists a clear need to understand and systematise what works and what does not work when protecting defenders.
The risks faced by women defenders or by defenders working in rural areas are very different from the risks faced by defenders in urban environments; protection solutions of defenders of rights of migrants in a particular country may also work for defenders of the same rights in other countries.
Increased understanding is the first step towards improvements in effectiveness. This may help other defenders looking for protection solutions.
Protection International has been researching a wide range of protection issues: protection from criminalisation, IT protection, protection of isolated communities, victims and witnesses protection programmes, and more. Our research results are captured in manuals, studies and reports, the lessons learned updates our support to Human Rights Defenders and helps them to build their capacity to also manage their security.
