Protection International set up its Protection Desk in Honduras in June 2011 with Honduran partners organisation ACI-Participa, led by Mr Leo Valladares; former Ombudsman of Honduras, and with the support of UDEFEGUA from Guatemala.

The Protection Desk carries out capacity building activities with organisations for indigenous and rural workers who are defending their community’s rights affected by agro-industry, infrastructure projects (dams) and mining projects. The Desk also supports journalists working on human rights issues, organisations defending the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and social workers groups involved in the violent suburbs of Tegucigalpa.

Protection International and ACI-Participa are involved in civil society’s movement for a national law that protects human rights defenders and advises State institutions on a national protection mechanism.

The human rights context
The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders reports on the context in Honduras in its annual report. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch describe the general human rights situation in Honduras in their respective annual reports.
