Protection International, Broederlijk Delen, CNCD-11.11.11, CIDSE, and the EU-LAT network invite you to a meeting with Bertha Zúniga Cáceres from COPINH and human rights defenders (Brussels, 14 May 2018, 18:30) (FR – NL)
More than two years after the murder of Berta Cáceres, human rights defender, environmental activist, and winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, we will hear her daughter Berta Cáceres Zúñiga testify on the progress of the investigation into this murder and on the report released in November 2017 by the International Advisory Group of Experts – GAIPE (an independent group that investigated the murder of Berta Cáceres), which revealed a lack of diligence in the investigation, including the lack of prosecution of potential intellectual authors of the murder. Speakers will take stock of the extremely difficult situation for environmental and human rights activists following the controversial presidential election in Honduras.
Interventions:
- Berta Zúñiga Cáceres. General Coordinator of COPINH
- Francisco Javier Sánchez. President of the Indigenous Council of the community of Río Blanco, Intibucá, where the hydroelectric project “Agua Zarca” was to be developed. Coordinator of Land and Territory of COPINH.

Berta Cáceres founded COPINH (Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras) in 1993 and defended the rights of the indigenous peoples of Honduras. It embodies the resistance against the Agua Zarca hydroelectric project, in which several international investors were or are still involved. His death has had a major resonance in the international media and drew attention to the intolerable reality of human rights in Honduras, the country that according to the NGO Global Witness became the most dangerous country in the world for environmental defenders.
