After the sudden passing of President Nkurunziza of Burundi, this coming Thursday General Évariste Ndayishimiye will take the oath to become the new President-elect of Burundi.

As this swift power transition unfolds, it also offers an opportunity to open a new chapter for the people of Burundi and its civil society. Our organizations encourage the newly elected President to place their tenure under the sign of reconciliation and to grant pardon to all human rights defenders who are currently unjustly detained, such as Germain Rukuki, Nestor Nibitanga, Egide Harerimana, Christine Kamikazi, Terence Mpozenzi, and Agnès Ndiribusa.

UN MOMENT DÉCISIF POUR L’AVENIR DES DÉFENSEUR·E·S DES DROITS HUMAINS AU BURUNDI

Après le décès soudain de M. Nkurunziza, Président du Burundi, Monsieur Évariste Ndayishimiye prêtera serment ce jeudi pour prendre ses fonctions en tant que nouveau Président de la République du Burundi.

Alors que cette transition politique se déroule jusqu’à présent sans encombre, l’opportunité se présente d’ouvrir un nouveau chapitre de l’histoire du Burundi, de son peuple et de sa société civile. Nos organisations encouragent le nouveau Président élu à placer son mandat sous le signe de la réconciliation et à gracier tous les défenseur·e·s des droits humains actuellement injustement détenus, dont Germain Rukuki, Nestor Nibitanga, Egide Harerimana, Christine Kamikazi, Terence Mpozenzi et Agnès Ndiribusa.
