According to COPINH, Berta did not receive the protection the CIDH had asked for, from the government side. Therefore, Protection International calls on the international community to demand the Honduran government investigate the murder of Berta Cáceres and offer immediate protection to all witnesses of the case.
We also released a joint statement at the 31st session of the UN Human Rights Council with the International Service for Human Rights, African Democracy Forum, Amnesty International, Article 19, Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, CELS, Frontline Defenders, Humanas and Peace Brigades International calling Honduran government:
“to guarantee the thorough, impartial investigation of this crime, recognising that impunity fuels further risks for defenders in the country, and commence inclusive consultations on the effective implementation of its recently adopted defenders law”.
