Protection International is grateful to have been part of the design and organisation of this excellent upcoming conference on HRD protection in Africa, organised by eLankidetza – Basque Agency for Cooperation and Solidarity.
Protection International had the opportunity to collaborate with the Agency to design this unique conference featuring excellent speakers and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) from Africa. The conference will cover current and urgent topics across the African continent, such as shrinking civic space, resource extraction, protection mechanisms and the defence of human rights during armed conflicts.
Human rights defenders in Africa face an increasingly challenging environment in their efforts to promote and protect human rights. Although they do vital work, HRDs and their organizations face threats and persecution that put their lives at risk.
Given this scenario, it is crucial to broaden our knowledge of the protection strategies and mechanisms that respond to the variety of coexisting realities on the African continent, as well as to reflect on how Basque society can contribute to guarantee the comprehensive protection of these human rights defenders.
With a majority of women HRD speakers, the event proposes discussions with HRDs and experts from nine different African countries, where HRD experiences and perspectives take centre stage.
Phanice Odhacha, regional director of Protection International-Africa, will participate in the roundtable on sub-regional and national HRD protection mechanisms.
