Background
In many parts of the world, the defense of human rights evokes pressure, threats, and attacks from state- and non-state actors. Protection International (PI) is a non-profit organization that supports human rights defenders (HRDs) in developing their security and protection management strategies. PI has been working since 2004 with local partners in over thirty countries across the globe, supporting individuals, organizations, networks, and communities whose right to defend human rights is being violated through threats, judicial harassment, stigmatization, or other forms of repression.
PI is one of the main organizations developing tools and tactics for the protection of human rights defenders at risk. PI develops targeted and detailed protection tools and materials aimed at reducing risks for defenders, as well as research and analysis reports on topics such as national protection mechanisms and the criminalization of HRDs.
PI is registered as an international non-profit association (AISBL) in Belgium. It has a Head Office in Brussels and Protection Desks (PD) in seven countries. PDs operate through partnerships with local NGOs or independently as locally-registered organizations. Aside from the field presence, PI also provides services to external stakeholders and participates in global and regional protection and advocacy initiatives.
As part of PI’s support to HRDs around the world, we develop a wide range of materials and tools such as protection manuals, policy reports, and online training tools, among others. PI’s main languages are English, French, and Spanish and we aim at making all our materials available at least in these three main languages.
