About PIA
Protection International Africa (PIA) is registered as a legal entity in Kenya and is recognized as a ‘non-government organization’. PIA is the regional hub for all Protection International’s work in Africa, with the office in Nairobi hosting the hub as well as the Kenya office. Additionally, PIA has direct engagement with the PI Country Office in DRC, a focal point in Tanzania and projects across the African Region in East Africa, West Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa.
PIA’s objective is to increase the agency of human rights defenders (HRD) and contribute to the creation of safe spaces for HRDs to continue advocating for the promotion and protection of HRDs’ right to defend human rights. This objective is achieved through capacity building in physical and digital security; monitoring, documentation and reporting of human rights violations; national, regional, and international advocacy; emergency response to human rights defenders at risk; and, network strengthening.
PIA is looking for a consultant to support fundraising, responsible for defining a donor targeting approach and developing processes to secure funds and build lasting partnerships with institutional donors, individuals, corporations, foundations, and other key stakeholders for our work in Africa. This role will work closely with the senior management team to identify funding opportunities, prepare compelling proposals, and foster relationships that align with the organization’s goals and mission. The consultant will work closely with PIA staff to create sustainable funding streams for both core operational costs and programmatic activities. The successful candidate will have experience in fundraising, partnership development, and donor relations, with a passion for our cause and a commitment to supporting the growth of the organization.
Rationale
PIA is looking for a Fundraising Consultant that will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to secure funds and build lasting partnerships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and other key stakeholders. This role will work closely with the senior management team to identify funding opportunities, prepare compelling proposals, and foster relationships that align with the organization’s goals and mission. The consultant will work closely with PIA staff to create sustainable funding streams for both core operational costs and programmatic activities. The successful candidate will have experience in fundraising, partnership development, and donor relations, with a passion for our cause and a commitment to supporting the growth of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and identify potential funding sources, including grants, foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors.
- Work with the senior management team to set 2025 annual fundraising targets and objectives and advise on 2026.
- Together with staff, write compelling proposals and other fundraising communications to attract and retain donors for activities in Kenya, DRC, Tanzania, and/ or Uganda as well as regionally.
- Develop tailored fundraising pitches for different donor segments, ensuring alignment with PI’s ethical guidelines and the interests of donors.
- Identify and support the establishment of strategic partnerships with corporations, foundations, and other organizations that can help support fundraising goals.
- Organize and attend meetings with potential partners and donors to support the presentation of the organization’s mission, programmes and impact.
- Analyze donor feedback and trends to improve future fundraising efforts and partnerships.
Deliverables
- Review and update the donor mapping and fundraising strategy, including a list of potential donors.
- A donor engagement plan and materials to support it based on the proposals outlined below.
- Progress funding discussions with at least three prospective donors.
- Identify potential partners in each core area of work with whom PIA could collaborate in target countries.
- Finalize a maximum of five well-researched and drafted proposals that can be submitted to donors, focused on the PI global strategy and key thematic areas to be agreed at the start of the consultancy, but may include collective protection, marginalized HRDs (women, disabilities, LGBTQ+, KVP), and land and environmental HRDs. The proposal formats will be elaborated with key staff but comprise of at least a narrative with background information and a description of activities, a MEAL plan, a work plan and a budget.
- Regular progress reports on fundraising efforts, including key metrics.

The Fundraising Consultant shall be based in Kenya, Nairobi preferably and be registered as an external consultant.
Venue and Timeframe
The consultancy is expected to begin on 10th April 2025 and will last for 3 months. The consultant is expected to allocate approximately 24 hours per week to this role.
